The majority of phrases can belong both to man and woman - those phrases are given in dark gray color font. However, some phrases in Russian language can belong either only to man or only to woman. You'll find such expressions in the Guide Book colored in blue and red correspondingly.
For example:
I am American. Я американец.
Я американка.
ya ah-meh-ree-KA-nehts.
ya ah-meh-ree-KAHN-ka.
The peculiarities of the Russian personal pronouns caused the necessity of mentioning two variants of some words within a sentence: as a rule the word before a slash is related to informal style, after a slash - to more polite, formal style.
